İngilizce Sınavlarda ,sınava giren öğrencilerin adeta bir baş belası olan Prepositions ( Edatlar) konusunda yardımcı olabilmek amacı ile bu sayfa hazırlanmıştır.
Akademik seviyedeki sınavlarda gerek essay yazarken gerekse kelimelerin eş anlam yada zıt anlamlarını bulmak için verilen sorularda fiil,sıfat isimlerden sonra kullanılan preposition (edatları) bilmek büyük önem taşır . Bu nedenle Prepositions ( Edatlar) ile ilgili bu konuda bilgi vermeyi Prepositions ( Edatlar) da bir görev saydık.
Prepositions of place:
at/above/against/along/among/
opposite/outside/over/under
in: inside
We use in to describe the position of a person or thing when he/she or it is enclosed in a place of which limits are clear:
The flowers are in the vase.
The flowers in the vase are from our garden.
Study the table.
They live in a village/town/city.
in Ankara.
in Turkey.
in Europe.
at
We use at to show the position of something or somebody when the limits of the place are not very clear.
Study the examples and the table.
There is a woman at the table.
The woman at the table is Miss Pope.
he is at his office/the station.
at the door/window/meeting
at the top/bottom of the hill.
at home/school.
at the barbers/butchers/tailors.
at Mr Browns/his uncle.

Prepositions ( Edatlar)
along: from one point to another
There are trees along the road.
The trees along the road are very beautiful.
in the middle of: in the central part of
There is a circle in the middle of the football field.
on: touching surface.
The book is on the table.
The book on the table is Ali’s.
under: below
The cat is under the table.
The cat under the table is ours.
over: above, at a level higher than but not touching.
The light is over the table.
The light over the table is on.
inside: on the inner part of or on the are; within
The owner of the house is inside the garden.
outside: at or on the outer part of
The postman is outside the garden.
The postman outside the gate is going to give a letter to the owner of the house.
among: in the middle of, surrounded by (referring to more than two people or things
The ball is among the players.
The ball among the players has black spots on it.
between: (referring to two persons or things)
The girl is between the man and the woman.
Perhaps the girl between the man and the woman is their child.
in front of
There is a man in front of the car but he is not in it.
in the front of
The driver is in the front of the car. (He is in the car)
at the back of: behind
The man is at the back of the car.
= He is behind the car.
in the back of:
There is a dog in the back of the car.
The dog in the back of the car is sitting.
at the beginning of: at the first point

The letter A is at the beginning of the line.
At the beginning of the lesson the teacher says what he will teach.
at the end of: at the last point

The letter B is at the end of the line.
behind : at the back of
There are 2 men behind the car.
The 2 men behind the car are getting nearer to it.
opposite: facing or on the other side of
May I sit opposite you?
I can see you well if I am opposite you.
against: touching
The boy is sitting against the tree.
Maybe the boy against the tree is resting.
= The boy leaning on the tree is resting.
next to: beside
This is our house. That is my elder brothers house.
My elder brothers house is next to ours.
The house next to ours is my elder brothers.
beside: Next to, close to the side of
Who is the girl beside you?
The girl beside me is one of my classmates.
near: close to the mentioned place or point, not far from.
There are a lot of chemists near the hospital.
The chemists near the hospital are open now.
by: close to the mentioned point or place
They have got a house by the sea.
Most of the houses by the sea have been built illegally.
on the right
The cat is on the right.
The cat on the right is standing.
on the left
The small cat is on the left.
The cat on the left is sitting.
above: higher than a given point or place.
The skirt of this dress is above the knees.
below: under, lower than a given point or place, less than
Skirts should be below the knees according to some people.
beneath: under, below
Our flat is on the fifth floor. Their flat is on the fourth floor. They live in the flat beneath ours.
The gratest part of an iceberg is beneath the surface of the water.
