Note : When we use –ing form as a noun, we call it gerund, when we use –ing form as an adjective, we call it present participle.

Sit down, please. (request)
3  I can visit you tomorrow. You must finish it today. (with modals)
4  I’ll have the tailor shorten my trousers. (causative)
5  A jockey makes the horse run by whipping it. (causitive)
6  Let him go.
As seen above, we use the infinitive form without to while giving orders (1) to form a request (2) with modals (3) and after causative verbs (4,5) or after some verbs (6).

7. With verbs of perception

As seen above, when see, notice, feel, hear or watch are used to state an action has been finished, the second verb becomes an infinitive without to.

8. In the present subjunctive

As seen above, when we want to state a preayer or a wish, although the subject is the third person singular, the verb becomes an infinitive without –s and to.

9. In that-clauses after some expression (sunjunctive)

I propose that my offer be accepted.
He ordered that the thief be caught.
The doctor suggested that the patient eat food without salt.

He demanded that the teacher remark his exam.
= He made the teacher remark his exam.

It is necessary that every citizen pay tax.
= Every citizen should pay tax.

As seen above, if a eish or suggeestion is expressed in the main clause, the verb in the ‘’that-clause’’ is an infinitive without to.

Notice : Should be used in the ‘’that clause’’ to express the same idea.
